Beginner Amigurumi Mistakes

We have all been there. All of us had to start as an amigurumi beginner, so let me share with you the beginner mistakes I made so you can avoid them!

Is amigurumi difficult? It can be at first. A lot of beginner amigurumi mistakes can make it seem hard! That’s why I’m here to share with you common amigurumi mistakes, and some tips to avoid them.

3 Common Mistakes

Crochet in One Loop Only:

Back in my early days of crochet, I didn’t realize that a crochet stitch technically had two loops and looked like a “V.” Because of this I was only crocheting through the front stitch which made my work look textured instead of smooth.

This technique (crochet in FLO) is used for certain patterns to get a desired look or shape, but I didn’t know I was doing this. I thought I was simply single-crocheting all the way around properly. However, I was not.

To do a regular crochet stitch, you want to be sliding the hook under both the back loop and front loop (the entire “V”).

Leaving the Wrong Side on the Outside:

I was always leaving the wrong side of my work on the outside of the amigurumi where people see it instead of on the inside of your amigurumi where the stuffing goes.

I find it easier to know which side is the wrong side (WS) and which is the right side (RS) when it comes to amigurumi compared to regular crochet projects. I have a video on TikTok explaining the difference between the right side and the wrong side of crochet.

Fix this by flipping your work inside out. You want the wrong side on the inside and the right side on the outside where everyone can see it! A trick that I do that has never failed me is to flip my work by the 2nd round of my amigurumi project/design. This way I don’t have to remember to flip everything at the end.

Not Using the Magic Ring or Chain 2 Method to Start:

There are two different ways that you can begin your amigurumi: the magic ring or the chain 2 method. Some find the magic ring too difficult and prefer to use the chain 2 method. Others despise the chain 2 method and would rather use a magic ring.

For some reason this is a controversial opinion in the crochet community, however, I say you do you. Whatever works for you when creating, that’s what you should do. Comfort is key. Bonus Tip:

Use the back end of your crochet hook to insert stuffing into pieces that you’re fingers can’t quite seem to fit, like arms and legs!
